To achieve this goal, the Department set up the Good Practice in Consent initiative and enlisted an advisory group made up of patient representatives, carers, clinicians, academics and NHS managers. The initiative, the work of the advisory group and good consent practice”

Good Practice in Consent :achieving the NHS Plan commitment to patient-centred consent practice – Health Service Circular (HSC 2001/023) “This circular focuses on the action necessary to ensure that the principles set out in the Reference guide to consent for examination or treatment are reflected in day-to-day NHS practice by: announcing the publication of the Good practice in consent implementation guide: consent to examination or treatment, containing new model consent forms and a new model consent policy; setting out the timescales for the implementation of this documentation; and clarifying what flexibility in design and use is acceptable”

It expands on the guidance in Good medical practice, which requires doctors to be satisfied that they have consent from a patient or other valid authority, before undertaking any examination or investigation, providing treatment, or involving patients in teaching and research”
