How to find books on the shelves

The library uses the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classification scheme. The class mark used reflects the main subject content of the book, but you may need to look in more than one location for the same subject. For example for books on liver disorders look in the gastroenterology section, for books on liver disorders in children look in the paediatrics section.

The broad NLM classification is as follows:

  • Pre-clinical Sciences

    QS-QZ
  • Medical Profession

    W
  • Public Health

    WA
  • Practice of Medicine

    WB
  • Specialities

    WC – WW
  • Hospital Services

    WX
  • Nursing

    WY
  • History of Medicine

    WZ

You are however entitled to make limited photocopies without permission from rights holders as follows.

  • The purpose of the copy must be either to support NHS activities (patient care, management, administration) or for your personal use as part of your education or research.
  • You should not make photocopies for non NHS activities or if the research is intended to lead to direct financial benefit to yourself.
  • The extent of the copying must be limited to the amount which does not affect the economic interests of the rights holder. You must decide what this amount is.
  • Established practice suggests that two articles from a journal or magazine (more from a themed issue) and one chapter or up to 5% of a book or report is acceptable. Observing Copyright law is your responsibility.
  • If you are unsure, please contact a member of the library staff.
