Clarification of misleading information reported about Winter Pressures at Bedford Hospital NHS Trust
January 4, 2018
There has been some misleading information included in media outlets regarding how Bedford Hospital is currently dealing with the Winter Pressures. The hospital would like to provide clarity to all of our stakeholders regarding this misleading information.
It has been reported that due to the current operational challenges we are facing (like many other NHS Hospitals) we are discharging all elderly patients and begging/making a plea to their families to collect them and care for them at home in order to ‘free up our beds’.
This is inaccurate and misleading to report. Bedford Hospital asked the public to help by only attending A&E if they are seriously unwell as this allows our clinical staff to focus on the most sick and vulnerable. Within our statement issued yesterday, we also advised that we had many elderly patients at the hospital and asked families of medically well patients who are ready to leave hospital, to help us by ensuring a smooth discharge process for the patient to their normal residency (their home or community care home).
We continue to work with all health and social care partners to ensure patients suitable to leave hospital are able to do so; and that those needing admission are done so in a timely and safe manner. Patient safety and experience is priority for Bedford Hospital and we will only discharge patients if they are medically well to do so and not before.
