Clarification of misleading information reported about local stroke services

September 26, 2017

Following the recent media coverage about local stroke services, Bedford Hospital NHS Trust would like to provide clarity to our patients about some misleading information reported.

Improvements to local stroke services has resulted in more patients being repatriated back to their homes or within their local community settings after receiving hyper-acute care at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital (L&D). Consequently, fewer patients are requiring acute care and rehabilitation at Bedford Hospital which is in line with National Best Practice.

It is important to reiterate that work to agree a future operating model for stroke services is completely separate to the recent merger proposal between Bedford Hospital and the L&D Hospital. This work was already underway across the Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes areas and will continue separate to merger discussions and at this stage, no decisions has been made. The longer term planning and commissioning of local stroke services will continue to be led by the Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group.
