New Head of Midwifery for Bedford Hospital
March 7, 2017
Shirley Jones has been appointed as the Head of Midwifery at Bedford Hospital NHS Trust. The new Head of Midwifery has joined from West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and has held a range of positions within nursing and women and children’s services spanning almost forty years.
The majority of her clinical experience and management experience has been within community and hospital settings. Commenting on her new post, Shirley said, “I am excited to be taking up this fantastic opportunity in a successful service with great potential. I have been welcomed by such a lovely and friendly team and I very much look forward to working with everyone. I’m fully aware of the ever changing landscape of the NHS and I hope to guide the service on a steady path building on the firm foundations already set and the good reputation that I can see is already evident.”
Tracey Brigstock, Acting Director of Nursing and Patient Services at Bedford Hospital said about the new appointment, “On behalf of the Trust Board, I would like to welcome Shirley to her new role. Shirley comes to us at a time when the hospital, including our maternity unit, is becoming increasingly busy with maternity services very high on the NHS Agenda. We are looking forward to working with Shirley and utilising her great experience and skills as we continue to develop our services for women and their babies”.
The maternity department is based in the Cygnet Wing of the hospital and offers three birthing pools within a midwife-led birthing unit (for mothers in low risk pregnancies), a 24/7 consultant-led obstetrics unit and for sick and premature babies, there’s a special care baby unit on site staffed by paediatric nurses.
In 2015-16, there were 3,016 babies delivered by the Trust’s Midwives.
